Graphic Design Panel
Hey buddies, an important announcement. Emily Wade, the SVA Librarian is actually organizing and putting together a discussion panel for the graphic design majors. The scheduled date is April 16th. At the moment she has two confirmed alums, and a long list of people she needs to contact. I think this would be a great jumping off point for next year's class if we were to co-sponsor the event (i.e. Presented by the Visual Arts Library and the Graphic Arts Council).
I'm asking for feedback on people you would like to see there. Maybe you work/intern for them, or there's someone in the area you really admire and would love to see them come talk at the panel. Emily's got a lot on her plate, and between all of us I think we can track down some people, and it would mean a lot more if there were people there we really wanted.
So:
1) Suggest anyone you would like to invite.
2) Get in contact with them yourself, or forward their information to me or Emily (ecwade@bu.edu).
3) Suggest any other things you'd like to do or see at this event.
It might be wise to handpick a few juniors to give the mantle to, and perhaps we can plan an all out end of the year GAC event. Post away please!

Sustainability
March 18-June 27, 2009Sustainability:
1. An aesthetic exploration of sustainability.
2. The potential of art and new modes of art practice to emphasize the link between environmental concerns and social relationships.
Be part of the solution.
You've probably seen a couple posters around for this show, but Holland, the gallery coordinator of the Hillel Gallery asked if I could help spread the word and thus embody the idea of sustainability and save some trees. Check out the Hillel website for more details and to get some ideas and find some fantastic links on sustainability and sustainable art. It'd be great if we could help put some posters together or figure out some other ideas (information design perhaps?). 2d and 3d work are welcome, so if you even have some old landscape paintings or drawings, feel free to enter those and fill out the application. There are jury cash prizes and the reception itself will really just be one big party and celebration of sustainability.
The deadline is next week, March 2. This might be a great exercise for anyone who's bored, especially Jane, if you want to do a brief foray into this kind of social/environmental issue. The show is open to all students in the Boston area, so feel free to forward the link.
And as a sidenote, please check out Holland's band, Fly Upright Kite. Their music is yummy, and so is the band name.

Writing about design
Saw this short article from a blog. It's concerns writing about our work. Great quick source to help us write about work for our online portfolio as well as when presenting work in person.

For the Metal Kid in All of Us

For Mr. Sean mostly, but everyone else too. My CD Baby newsletter just happened to have a feature list of super sweet metal album covers. I'm sure the music is just as good. Mmm, illegible logos and badass demons.

crowdSPRING

As most of you have probably done by now, Bridget and I met with our company for the Mass Software Council project, and one of them mentioned this website called crowdSPRING. It's basically a site where companies and designers sign up, then companies put out a bid for what they need (logo, website, flash demo, etc.), and designers come to the call, and if their work gets chosen, they get the job, and the sweet monies.
It looks like the community is pretty lively and it would be a good motivator if you're looking to add more things to your portfolio, but want to actually design for a real client. You're able to upload your portfolio, and it generally looks like a great way to keep the creative juices flowing, look at what other people come up with, and maybe even make some cash on the side.
